What is Tantalum Diboride used for?

1. Aerospace & Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs)

• Hypersonic-vehicle thermal-protection systems: leading edges, nose tips and wing leading edges subject to >2,000 °C aerodynamic heating; its melting point (~2,900–3,040 °C) and oxidation resistance preserve structural integrity.

• Rocket-engine and nozzle components: nozzle throats, combustion-chamber liners and thrust-chamber coatings resist high-temperature gas erosion and chemical attack, extending engine life.

• Spacecraft high-temperature protective coatings: used on re-entry vehicle surfaces to improve thermal-shock and ablation resistance while reducing TPS weight.

• UHTC composites: a key constituent of UHTCs, compounded with SiC, ZrC and others for extreme-environment structural components.

2. Electronics & Semiconductor Industry

• Semiconductor diffusion barrier: in IC copper-interconnect processes, TaB₂ films act as diffusion barriers, preventing Cu migration into the Si substrate and improving device reliability.
